Credits cards were first introduced in the US in the 1920s as a form of payment for gas purchases to a growing number of automobile users. Western Union can be considered to have issued the first charge cards as early as 1914. But these were issued to its select frequent customers and not to the general public. Similarly, large retail department stores have set up charge accounts for their frequent and loyal customers, later issuing special in-store credit cards for the purpose.
